Setting Up An Entire Business With eBay Sales

Posted by blogmeister under Articles, Ebay Sales
Setting Up An Entire Business With eBay Sales

Like any other sole proprietorship, there are several laws that are enforced when you set up an entire business around selling items on eBay.  As an individual seller, you are not required to register a business; however, if you don’t, you still have to report earnings from eBay for personal tax purposes.  Many people who sell regularly on the auction site will choose to register the sole proprietorship just to keep things simpler.

Once you’ve done this, you are required by law to report to the tax assessor collector several times a year, usually once per quarter, the earnings for that quarter.  This allows the government to keep track of your consistency and your earnings throughout the year so that, when it is time for the tax return, it is easier for them to review your reported earnings and compare.  If you have any employees, you must also keep track of their hours and pay.

Any supplies you purchase to assist you in the eBay sales business, including software packages, packing and shipping supplies, and even the expense of shipping the item, should be kept in addition to the cost of the merchandise and the warehousing expenses so that these can be deducted for tax purposes.  Itemized receipts should always be kept in a file in case of an audit, as should copies of all invoices for items sold and shipped.

Remember that, on eBay, you normally do not have to charge taxes to your buyers because the interstate transactions void this need.  However, if a purchaser lives within the same state as you, you are required to charge the state tax percentage for the transaction.  Most states do not require that tax be charged on the shipping fees, but the sales price must have a tax tacked on.  Local taxes are not required.  For example, in Dallas, Texas, you will pay 8.25% tax at a local store.  However, 2% of this is a local tax, so a sale made over eBay to someone in Houston, Texas, incurs a 6.25% sales tax.

These are just a few of the rules and regulations involved in starting an eBay business.  You should check with your local courthouse and the tax assessor collector for further guidelines within your area.  Making the effort to register a business can be helpful, but it will only cause you legal trouble if you don’t pay attention to the laws of the land.

A Work From Home Opportunity Through eBay Sales

A Work From Home Opportunity Through eBay Sales

How often have you wished that you didn’t have to get up every morning, get ready, and make the commute to work?  How many times have you thought about what you could do to start your own business and work from home?  Try as you might, though, you can’t seem to come up with an idea that is suitable for providing your family in the same way as your current career path.

There is an answer to your problems.  Rather than jump head first into a business that you cannot guarantee to be profitable, you can begin with a small side business that can supplement your current income.  One of the quickest ways to get started is to set up for eBay sales. This is a work from home business opportunity that can be set up on the side of your present job and grow from there.

At first, you’ll reap the benefits of the additional income, regardless of how much or how little it may be.  It is still supplemental to your current salary.  Then, as you learn more about how eBay sales work, you’ll be able to manipulate your sales structure to make more profit, and you’ll get satisfaction out of your own personal success.

Eventually, your eBay sales will turn into a self supporting business, and you’ll be able to exit the workforce and live solely off your eBay business venture.  You’ll reap the benefits of being your own boss and setting your own hours.  You’ll be able to determine what you sell and set your own prices.  You won’t have to commute to and from work every day, and you won’t even have to get dressed in the morning if you don’t wish to do so.

Best of all, you’ll have a lot more time for your family and for pleasure activities.  You’ll have time to get to those projects around the house that you’ve been anxious to do for years, and you’ll be more satisfied with your lifestyle.  It’s easy to get started – simply register with the eBay auction site, find something to sell, and list it.  The worst thing that can happen is that the item doesn’t sell, and you have lost a few cents.  Don’t give up; keep trying till you find your niche.  It is well worth the effort when you reach success.

Making Your eBay Sales Listings Stand Out

Making Your eBay Sales Listings Stand Out

As you begin to use the eBay auction site, you’ll notice that it can be difficult to make your listings stand out.  As an international site with millions of listings at any one time, you are bound to find someone else (and usually several others) offering the same product as you.  How can you make sure that your item is the most attractive one on the search return list?

There are several tools on the eBay site that can help you make your auction stand out above the rest.  Though most of them cost extra, they can drastically increase your chance of profitability.  For example, one of the easiest ways to showcase your eBay listing is to add a gallery image.  This picture will appear on the search return page next to the title of your listing.  It allows customers to preview your item without having to click on anything and open up another window.  This is also one of the least expensive ways to help your listing stand out.  Unfortunately, this is a common solution, so your item may still get lost in the shuffle.

The next step is to add a subtitle to your listing.  This is for further explanation and description of the listing, again prior to opening up the full description.  That allows a potential buyer to determine if his or her interest is great enough to continue on with the viewing of the auction.  You can also achieve greater visibility with a bolded or highlighted auction listing.  This makes it stand out among all the other listings, either in a darker, larger print or backed with a bold color, like purple or green.

You can also create a premier listing that places your auction at the top of every search page for a related keyword.  That means that, if there are hundreds of listings under a keyword heading and you have to scroll through pages, it will be at the top of every page.  Note that this is an expensive way to showcase an eBay listing, which means that you should only use this option for a special auction that is guaranteed to sell for a large profit margin.  With so many tools to choose from, though, if you find the right combination, you’ll be able to make your auction stand out above the competition.

Starting An eBay Store For eBay Sales

Posted by blogmeister under Articles, Ebay Sales
Starting An eBay Store For eBay Sales

If you’ve tried regular eBay auction sales and determined them to be too expensive, you may find that an eBay store is a great solution to your problems.  Rather than dealing with the hassle of listing and relisting items every seven days and paying the higher listing fees, you can opt for an eBay store, where listings can be set up for a fraction of the cost and can be left up of thirty or even sixty days.

One of the joys of an eBay store is the ability to set fixed price items.  This means that there is no need to guess what you might make on an object, and when a buyer decides that they want something, they can simply purchase it immediately.  There is no waiting period for the auction to end, and there is no worry that another prospective purchaser will outbid them.  They simply click the item and go, just like a sales website.

Another great thing about running an eBay store is the fact that you do not have to monitor the listings as closely.  Instead of having to relist your items every seven days, you can set up an item to remain listed for thirty or sixty days, which almost assures you of a sale prior to the listing running out.  Best of all, for a small monthly fee, you have the ability to list items at a fraction of the cost of regular auctions.  Instead of building up high fees every week, you can simply incur the minimal fees every month for the fixed price listings in an eBay store.

The eBay store is a simple way to list multiple items that are similar or exactly the same.  This is instead of relisting the item over and over until you have sold them all.  You also do not have to pay the price for a multiple listing.  Instead, for a few cents, you can list each item at once.  You’ll need to monitor the listings with less diligence, and you’ll be able to spend less time creating listings and making sure that all items are available for sale at all times.  With the exception of shipping, it is almost a “fix it and forget it” situation.  You can find information on the functionality of an eBay store right on the website.  If you’ve been spending too much time keeping up with your eBay business, this may be right for you.

From eBay Sales To A Website

Posted by blogmeister under Articles, Ebay Sales
From eBay Sales To A Website

Once you’ve built an eBay empire, you may be curious as to whether it is worth the price of the fees that are charged.  Although the percentages are low and may not seem significant, when you have several listings, they can begin to add up to a less than pleasant expenditure.  Now, you have enough interest in your product or service that you are thinking about starting your own sales website.  How can you transition from eBay to your own website, and how can you be sure that the profits will follow?

First of all, you must compare the costs of running a website with the cost of eBay.  You need to find out the cost of owning a domain, as well as the cost of using a service to accept credit card payments.  You will also have to monitor the website much more closely than eBay, and you will probably want to pay an expert to build the site to begin with.  The costs begin to add up, and the time should be accounted for as well, since you are supposed to be drawing a salary.

One way to acquire business for your website on startup is to collect the information of former eBay buyers and send out bulk emails and mailings as advertisements for your new site.  You will also want to get on a search engine right away so that a search for the items you are selling will pull up your site in return, directing people to the possibility of finding what they desire from you.

Posting ads through pay-per-click services can also bring you buyers, though this is another cost that must be accounted for in the expenses occurred when setting up a website to follow your eBay business venture.  Unfortunately, you cannot advertise your website on your eBay listings, but you can contact former customers with information on your new venture.

If you do feel that you can profit more from a website and that it won’t cost too much to set up, then try it.  You can find discount domain name providers and several sources for setting up the site to look professional.  There are also many different services through which you can accept credit card payments.  If you shop around, you will be able to find the best deals and save yourself a lot of money.

Choosing the Right Products for eBay Sales

Posted by blogmeister under Articles, Ebay Sales
Choosing the Right Products for eBay Sales

Part of building a successful eBay sales business is choosing the right product to sell.  While you can try selling just about everything under the sun, and some people have, the profitability of most items is limited or nonexistent.  With research, you’ll find that a number of people have tried to sell various products with no luck, losing money rather than earning it.  You must choose to sell items on eBay that promise a return on investment.

One way to determine what products sell well on eBay is to look up the history.  When you perform an item search on eBay, you can actually request a view that provides information only on the auctions that have ended.  Trolling through this view allows you to take note of how many of the previous auctions have sold and at what price you can expect to sell the same item.  Unfortunately, turning a profit on new items can be difficult or even impossible, especially when you must calculate in the cost of warehousing and shipping those items.  This is why many choose to begin with gently used or pre-owned items in their eBay business.  Should you opt to sell new items, be sure to find good, wholesale prices, and try to find a place with which you can offer drop shipping so that you do not need to warehouse your merchandise.

Most people have items around the house that are not in use, and these can be used to “test the waters” on eBay, meaning that the only expense on your part, should the item not sell, is the listing fee, which is only a few cents.  Perhaps you have a pair of jeans that you’ve worn only once, or maybe you have your prom dress or tuxedo that you will never use again (especially if it doesn’t fit anymore!).  These can return a good sum on eBay, and while you won’t recover what you spent, you’ll have cash rather than a useless item that would have just been lying around otherwise.  Depending upon your success, you may eventually find an avenue in purchasing these used products from others in your area and reselling them on eBay.

Now that you’ve discovered a jumping off point, you need to figure out how to budget so that you turn a profit on the items you sell.  What expenses and fees do you have to account for in setting your auction price?

Understanding the eBay Sales Structure

Posted by blogmeister under Articles, Ebay Sales
Understanding the eBay Sales Structure

In order to function in the parameters of eBay, you must understand the sales structure under which the auction site operates.  There are several different ways to sell items and several different fees and charges that must be considered when operating your eBay business.  If you are going to build a successful business venture, you must be familiar with the ins and outs of it.

First of all, you need to be aware of all fees that are to be charges.  There is a fee for listing the item to begin with, based on the amount you list as the starting price for the item.  As the starting price of the item increases, so will the listing fee.  Also, upon completion of a sale, eBay will charge a small percentage as a commission.  There are additional fees for optional services, such as additional pictures, gallery items, bold and highlighted listings, or other special services that further promote your item.

Second, you must know all of your sales options.  There are different types of auctions, starting with the basic seven-day open auction that allows pretty much anyone to place a bid.  You also have other time period options, including 3-day, 10-day, and even single-day auctions.  You can add buy-it-now options to your items – this tends to draw more buyers.  You can also have fixed-price listings that work as a “buy-it-now” only feature.  You can even have an eBay store where you can list your items for a discounted rate and leave them there for a full thirty days, avoiding the need to relist items weekly.

If you have several of an item, you can set up a multiple item auction that will keep track of how many you have left based on the number you have sold.  All sales can be tracked through eBay, making your bookkeeping easy and allowing you to keep up with the profits you are making.

Through the feedback feature, you can build an empire.  By pleasing all your buyers, you will receive positive feedback, and the approval rating for your service will make you a valuable, trusted seller in the eyes of other eBayers.  Take your time and be efficient, and you will be successful.  Be sure you know all the different ways that you can minimize costs and maximize profits so that you can have a business that pays and satisfies.

Planning for Profits with eBay Sales

Posted by blogmeister under Articles, Ebay Sales
Planning for Profits with eBay Sales

It is easy to begin selling items on eBay, and almost anyone can register to do so.  However, the difficult part is coming up with an idea that will offer a profitable return on investment.  You have to plan carefully to be sure that you will profit from your eBay business venture, and this means lots of research, determination, and savvy.  You’ll have to know about which products sell best, and how much you can expect to receive for those items.

You must first be certain that you can purchase new items wholesale at a reasonable price.  If you cannot get a good discount on your own price, you will never be able to sell the items for a profit because you won’t be able to pass the savings on to bidders.  If you mark up the item to return a profit after paying too much, no one will buy from you.  Also you are likely to run into other sellers who offer the same items and, because they were able to get a better price, can offer a better deal.

Another way to achieve higher profit is to keep operating costs low.  Warehousing costs can make it difficult to price your items at a profitable level.  If you can possibly avoid any warehousing, or at least minimize the space required, you will save a lot of money.  If you can have merchandise drop-shipped, you’ll avoid all warehousing costs, and if you can make storage space within your house, you’ll avoid the need or a separate storage facility.

To save on shipping costs, get an account with a local shipping business or a boxing company.  If you can find a place from which you can collect used boxes, such as warehouses or supermarkets, you will not need to purchase new ones for all shipments.  However, with a regular account at a boxing supply house or a shipping company, you can receive a great discount on your shipping supplies.  Also, don’t just assume that one method of shipping is always the cheapest.  Shop around, and you’ll find that different locations incur a greater charge through one service than through another.

Profit can only be found, even with the best products, through intelligent planning.  You must research and determine the most effective way to make your business function, just like a large corporation.  Without planning ahead and making intelligent choices, you will never succeed.

Where Do I Start With eBay Sales?

Posted by blogmeister under Articles, Ebay Sales
Where Do I Start With eBay Sales?

When you begin a business selling items on eBay, the first step is to determine what exactly you are going to sell.  This means careful research into the profitability of items on eBay.  You want to avoid investing in items with no potential for return, so you should start by running through the history on eBay to see how well the product of choice has sold in the past.

You can do this through a standard eBay search.  Simply enter the item or keywords in regards to the item and perform the search.  You will first see the list of current items on auction that match your search.  However, you can then choose the option to view “completed listings”, and you will see the success rate of previous listings. You’ll see not only the percentage of items sold but also the amount that the items sold for.  You can use this eBay information to determine if the sell price for which you can offer the item will be able to compete with others or if you will even be able to sell your item at all.

If you cannot make a profit and still beat out the other sellers then you should consider a different product.  Also, if there are several different sellers offering the same item as you, it may not be worth your while to follow that avenue, as someone will eventually outsell you in price.  You want to find a product that is at least somewhat unique to offer so that you have little, if any, competition and can determine your own sell price.  It will also guarantee that you hit a market of some sort that will be interested in your product, even if it takes time for this venture to become a success.

With a little research and common sense, you’ll be on your way to eBay sales success in no time.  All you need is a little advice and patience, as well as a great business plan and product, and you can make a success of your venture.  If you can’t seem to find the right product or don’t have any ideas offhand, there are several sources of business ideas and eBay sales advice books that can help you get started.  If all else fails, troll around on eBay, and find out what sells.  Look for what is missing and what no one else offers and try that avenue.

eBay Sales 101

Posted by blogmeister under Articles, Ebay Sales
eBay Sales 101

For years now, everyone has talked about eBay and the possibilities of getting rich from sales on the auction site.  However, you never believe such stories quickly, and now that it’s been going strong for so long, you have finally thought about jumping on board.  Yet, you know absolutely nothing about how the site actually functions.  You can’t begin to imagine selling items on the Internet and having strangers pay you through an online service.  How does it all work?

First of all, eBay requires all users to register.  As purchases are completed, members become “verified” and receive feedback from other buyers and sellers regarding their satisfaction with the transaction.  You can read through any member’s feedback or view a percentage of satisfied customers for anyone prior to engaging in your transaction.

Basically, eBay allows people wishing to dispense with items or sell merchandise to reap the greatest possible benefit by offering the entire nation (and even many in international locations) to bid on the item for sale, just as they would at a physical auction.  At the same time, buyers can review an item and decide themselves how much they are willing to pay to purchase the item.  A buyer will set their own price (which must at least meet the minimum request set by the seller), and the highest bidder wins the item.

Several payment options are available; money orders are accepted by most eBay sellers, and some will accept personal and cashier’s checks.  However, the preferred method of payment by most is eBay’s PayPal service.  This allows individuals to pay either by credit or debit, or by electronic check.  The money is deposited into the seller’s “account”, and it can either be used to pay for eBay fees and other merchandise, or a PayPal debit card can be issued so that the money can be used anywhere that major credit cards are accepted.

The eBay auction site is a great place for people to interact, as long as purchasers are willing to wait for the items to ship to them.  Great discounts can be found, and many collectibles, antiques, and hard to find items are also available on eBay.  It can also be a great source of income for sellers, supplementing a regular career or even becoming a career itself.  Using eBay is easy, and with a little practice, you can become an expert at the process.
